An Intern’s Log - Brandon Tan

Our intern from Temasek Poly, Brandon shares his his 4-month internship journey with us in this article.

Aren’t we interns simply modern slaves? To be unappreciated and slaved away with mind-numbing tasks from 9 to 6. Irritating and uncaring supervisors, cold and distant colleagues. Yet internships remain important, be it to seek real-world experience, explore a potential career path, or source for training contracts, etc. Isn’t that why we interns take the leap of faith? Don’t we all want a meaningful experience where we are welcome and valued?

As an 18-year-old, I took that leap of faith, and I could not have been any more nervous! After spending 4 months with Covenant Chambers, I am glad that my wish came true and I had an immensely fruitful and enjoyable experience. With plentiful learning opportunities, reliable mentors, and a close-knit culture, I couldn’t have asked for more.

Covenant Chambers offered a cornucopia of learning opportunities. As a general litigation firm, I was exposed to a wide range of laws from Family Law to Commercial Litigation. On top of that, I gained practical experience from filing documents and drafting legal documents. I was guided by patient colleagues willing to show me the ropes. I also got to accompany the lawyers to exciting court sessions with a front-row seat to all the thrilling legal action! It was a surprise to have such an action-packed internship, but a welcome one.

Another valuable experience was having a lawyer as a mentor. In a new and daunting environment, I was initially lost and afraid of everything. Fortunately, I was assigned a mentor, Associate Director Goh Hui Hua. Hui Hua is incredibly jovial and helpful and he shares incredibly insightful takes on the legal profession. His advice often leaves me to ponder and reflect on my current outlook and opinions. These mentorship discussions emphasised open communication and goal-setting where I received practical advice and views that spurred my personal development.

Perhaps what I appreciate most about Covenant Chambers is the supportive environment. As a small firm, Covenant Chambers functions as a close-knit team where everyone is valued and respected. There are many opportunities to bond with other colleagues and socialise. I always look forward to lunch where the firm goes out together regardless of position. Over lunch, we laugh and share our thoughts and feelings in a safe space while enjoying the delectable lunch haunts in the area. I never thought that I would be chatting with a Director over video games! During a lull in the afternoon, the friendly office banter gives my mind a good recharge. It is these small moments that make me feel included and cared for in a fast-paced environment.

Looking back, I don’t regret interning with Covenant Chambers. I am appreciative of the boundless care and support from everyone, for being patient with the inexperienced and stumbling intern. It was a fruitful 4 months, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
